G53.4+0.05 – a new Galactic supernova remnant discovered with LOFAR [HEAP]

We present the serendipitous discovery of a new supernova remnant, G53.4+0.05, in deep targeted LOw Frequency ARray (LOFAR) High Band Antenna (HBA) observations of the pulsar wind nebula G54.1+0.3. We use LOFAR HBA observations as well as archival Westerbork Synthesis Radio Telescope and Very Large Array observations to find that G53.4+0.05 has a radio spectral index of ~0.7, which is consistent with the expected range for supernova remnants. Using archival Spitzer data, we show that there is no infrared emission associated with G53.4+0.05. Furthermore, G53.4+0.05 is detected in archival XMM-Newton observations. Our analysis of the XMM-Newton observations shows that G53.4+0.05 has the spectral characteristics of a supernova remnant: it has strong emission lines and is best characterized by a non-equilibrium ionization model. The combination of radio, infrared, and X-ray characteristics show that G53.4+0.05 is a supernova remnant, the first discovered by LOFAR. We also discuss other supernova remnants and supernova remnant candidates in the LOFAR field of view.
