Metallicities of Kepler Stars: LAMOST vs. KIC [EPA]

http://arxiv.org/abs/1311.1203

We use 6000 stars from LAMOST DR1 data to show that the metallicities of Kepler field stars as given in the Kepler Input Catalog (KIC) systematically underestimate both the true metallicity and the dynamic range of the Kepler sample. Specifically, we find $$ {\rm [Fe/H]}_{\rm KIC} = -0.21 + 0.41{\rm [Fe/H]}_{\rm LAMOST}, $$ with a scatter of about 0.26 dex, due almost entirely to errors in KIC. This relation is well-determined for $-0.55<{\rm [Fe/H]}_{\rm LAMOST}<+0.45$ where we have $>100$ comparison stars per 0.1 dex bin, and remains approximately valid in a slightly broader range. When the relation is inverted, the error in true metallicity as derived from KIC is (0.26 dex)/0.41 = 0.63 dex. Fortunately, many more LAMOST spectroscopic metallicities will be available in the near future.
